Dichroic glass is a high-tech spin-off of the space industry. ‘Dichroic’ means having more than one colour especially when viewed from different angles. Bracelets
;ilac perls The glass in produced in a vacuum at extremely high temperatures when microscopically thin layers of metal oxides, such as titanium, silicon and magnesium are sprayed onto the surface of the glass. These coatings transmit certain wavelengths of light and reflect others creating different colours within the glass.
To create a piece of jewellery I use the wonderful iridescence and colour of dichroic glass and combine it with coloured or clear backing glass to create completely unique pieces of jewellery. This is then fired in my kiln for about 5 hours reaching up to 780 degrees centigrade. chestnut leaf
Terquoise necklace Each piece is finished with combination of silver fittings, wires or using fabrics such as silk chiffon and velvet ribbon to contrast in texture and appeal. It is a thoroughly enjoyable process!

I also work with glass fusing and slumping techniques to produce small sculptural pieces of glass such as the hanging horsechestnut leaf photographed above.
